Most small leaks will still give you a couple hours before the board noticeably loses pressure. I've only pierced my board via hook once and that was when I made the rookie mistake of letting a spotty flop around on deck with a jerk bait in its mouth. I use a net now and remove the lure first.
I have gotten leaks on the side from dragging my board on concrete while washing it - NRS makes a urethane glue that you can use with a PVC patch will hold up really well.
