If you want to try camping, just start small. You can decide if you like it.
You'll be car camping. Meaning you'll load up your car, drive somewhere, and camp.
Look for campgrounds nearby. You can even drive to them beforehand and scope them out. See what kind of sites they have, see if they have hot showers and such. Your gf may appreciate the showers. If you want a really primitive experience, then just find somewhere like a state forest that allows dispersed camping. For your 1st time, I wouldn't recommend that though.
Get a tent, don't spend too much on one to start. Just borrow one. Get 2 sleeping bags. You need something to sleep on. The easiest is an inflatable pad from Wal-Mart for like $20. Wont keep ypu that warm but if its in summer it wont matter. You can also just use a foam mat, but they aren't very comfortable.
Get a few coolers. Load up one with drinks, water, beer, whatever you want. Load the other up with food. Cold stuff if you don't have a grill. If you have a grill, bring hot dogs, hamburgers, whatever.
Bring or buy some wood for a campfire. Sit around it in a few folding camp chairs. Afterwards have awkward sex in the tent you borrowed.
Just keep it simple, it's easy.
