I'm coming to the conclusion that a hori hori is actually a really great thing to carry when you're camping or doing some extended hiking. Depending on the kind you get they can be extremely sharp. It's a trowel, knife, saw/notch maker, and some have a bottle opener just for fun. It's really a great all around tool.
I have spent decades in the woods, and I have never had a situation where I truly NEEDED a razor sharp carving knife or something. Usually all I would ever need is something that can cut some string or help me shave apart some wood for a fire. A hori hori does the job every time. Does anyone use one exclusively in the woods? You could even get a fish with it.
