Gold is a meme too, it looses value same as normal money only you cant spend it in smaller amounts, keeping lots of cash is the only sane thing to do. When shit hits the fan you bail and spend it all on bribes and fuel to get as far away as possible.
Notice how during every crisis all the shot callers leave the country within hours. The "have some supplies and hunker down" advice is just to keep normal people from clogging the streets while everyone in power/rich bails.
