As said thermals aren't great to navigate but they're nice to find people and occasionally animals. Do note they can be troublesome to get working especially if you want range with it, otherwise get some CAT phone with FLIR. Also they can have trouble when you have big differences in temperature such as snow and dark rocks in the sun.

NVG are also set up for that so if you really wanna go that route get yourself some nice nods. That's also why troops have a blinking IR light on their helmet
