You can stack them one after another so when the first layer fills up second will start to catch water and so on, with half moons you want to offset rows so any water that goes around first row is captured by second row.
The difference between swales and half-moons is half moons need at least two rows, preferably more and are self contained so if one breaches others will hold just fine, swales are more like dams, if they breach at any point they'll start draining there but you only need one to capture water and you can redirect water as needed by sloping them downwards to a pond or away from you house for example
