I was wondering why this guy was thrashing so hard until I had it on the shore. What kind of luck is this?! I'd been seeing a large bass (relative to what I'd typically see there) in a particular pool in this creek for quite some time, but had no way to get down there.
I finally had the chance, and picked my way down-stream, on rocks, through knee-deep water in places, almost slipping in some areas, sinking into soft mud a few times. I managed to reach the pool.
I cast towards a low-hanging branch, near some roots hanging off the bank. I cast a little high (shit!) and caught in the limb (fuck!). A gentle pull freed the grub, and it fell across the back of the branch, and into the water.
Almost immediately, the small pool erupted. Fish on! So I reeled. This little fucker was swimming erratically, not just trying to swim away. I'd never seen this behavior.
I kept reeling. I thought the fish had seen the activity above, and struck as soon as the lure hit the water. But wrong, I was!
I finally landed the fish, to find this! I had managed to hook it in the eye.
I really hope I didn't cause any permanent damage.
