The name intermodal says it all; any container that can be passed straight from ship to train to truck and vice versa, ie different "modes". Piggy backs refers to transport truck trailers that are on flats, ready to unload and roll. I've avoided them because you have to ride out in the open. I suppose it's not bad advice to start with junk as you said, though my first ride was a 48. Of course I was with people who'd done it before.
and ditto all that about carrying a small pack. Everything I learned about camping and wilderness survival went out the window when I started riding trains. You simply cannot carry the same amount of gear, there are "necessities" you have to cut to reduce weight and encumbrance. You be the judge of what gets cut from your gear.

Again this is second hand information but I've heard it SO MANY times. I'm sure it is as you say as well though, a good place to meet like minded travelers.
