Canvas is legit for regular use. Bags using it tend to have generalized pockets, instead of pigeonholing you into one style of (given piece of gear). It is a generational material (though I'd like to see how my cordura bag ages). It can be repaired by amateurs. And it's strong in all directions (allowing good lashing ability).
The weight doesn't bother me, but like wool, it's artificially valued. I don't care enough about being cool to pay that much.
