Usually, these were made using the regrowth from coppiced willow trees back in the middle ages. Its a woven fence. You weave the branches over each post, like a basket.
They never really took off over here in the Americas.
I believe this would be the perfect use for privet cuttings. I have cut the damn things back every few months, and it would be actually useful, rather than just burning them.
