I've been looking at getting a day sailing/cruising oriented dinghy for sailing in the puget sound area and have recently gotten paranoid about water temperature and clothing. Almost everything I read online seems oriented towards more racing oriented boats, assumes you'll get wet every time you sail, and seems to state a wetsuit/drysuit is necessary. I'm looking at boats which ideally are dryer and that I am less likely to push towards the edge but realize with this size of boats I need to be prepared in case I do capsize.
I'd like to avoid the hassle and cost of a wetsuit especially if I intend on staying dry. Is layering wool/fleece/synthetics enough to stay alive/safe if I do end up going for a swim and need to self rescue? If I do need a wetsuit can I just wear it under normal clothes?
Quick research tells me the water will be ~50°f
