i am content to sit for 8 hours doing nothing but feathersticks, spoons, tentpegs, spatulas etc, i often leave then at the camp spot.
second option would be

thankfully im really good at falling asleep on command and i would probably just "skip" the day and hike at night, but if i had to "entertain" myself i have a journal/notebook, and i still have my tools so i would likely dash out to grab some wood
i guess sharpening stuff would count as recreational, sitting under a tarp in a drizzle sharpening your axe is waaay better then at home in your workshop
