I've hiked Mt Wilson a few hundred times, Baldy at least 3 dozen, San Gorginio, Cactus to Clouds on San Jacinto, you name it I've done it. Here in the bay it's a 4 hour drive minimum for a true wilderness experience.
Did you ever think that maybe all the Socal time has eroded some of your winter toughness, that it might come back after a few winters? I took a trip to Reno recently to climb Mt Rose in winter, and the first gust of 50mph wind in 20 degree weather felt like a white walker grabbed me. But, I've also experienced the Summit of Mt Whitney in well below 0 degrees at midnight with no problems (besides altitude sickness) a few years back. Just hoping I'm not winter soft forever
