There are however other reasons to make a fire than survival. That's where batoning comes into the picture.
When it's 2 or 3 days I have just sleeping and cooking equipment in addition to day hike gear. I wouldn't go to Siberia without an axe, but for hiking there are far more critical things to carry, like raingear and extra water.
