When both are used with one hand, a knife is easier and lighter to swing. When used with two hands, a hatchet wins.
Has anyone of you ever tried a big knife, like RTAK 2?
If you attach a lanyard loop and put your hand throug it, you don't need to hold on very tight when hitting. Also the blade can be sharpened at lower angle which makes it more effective. These things make a huge difference. I was sceptical first until I tried one. For me a knife has replaced a hatchet. That said, there is no alternative for a full sized two hand axe.
