If Im in a snaggy areas I use a sweep and reel retrieve to get the bait to skip over cover, often triggering bites. That softer action helps lessens snags, loads for better casts, and doesn't pull the bait away on bites. I like the Excalibur x-50s best in cover since they have a nice tipforward design, making harder to snag. In open water or vegetation, I like the Strike king red eye shad. It has a nice wiggle on the fall so i rip it upwards and let it fall on slightly slack line. I usually use 10lb mono and a high retrive speed reel. Unlike lipped cranks, a lipless crank doesn't have much resistance so low ratios are not needed. I like the high speed also to pick up line when Im sweep and reeling.
