Of course jeans do in general soak up a lot of water.
I wouldn't use jeans if there was a high likelyhood of getting wet, but when it's nice and dry, maybe cool weather, I will often use jeans.
They can take a lot of abuse if it's of decent quality, comfy, warm enough for spring or fall if it's dry.
Also, my most used pants for /out/ stuff are made from cotton, though waxed, quite thin and light material, dries very fast on the body, much faster than any synthetics I've used, doesn't smell like shit after being sweaty once, doesn't rip easily, it's just damn good as long as it isn't pissing down.
