People tend to be afraid of things like snarling dogs, and rustles in the darkness, because, tens of thousands of years ago, these were very real threats to ones life.
That snapping branch could very well be a saber-toothed tiger ready to chew your face off.
We're left with a fear of these things, even though the chances of being torn asunder by wildlife is far less nowadays.
This leaves us with the question of why we carry an ingrained fear of deformed faces, and too-skinny monsters.
Is it because, they too, were the things behind the campfire, in the shadows, waiting for the opportunity to pounce?
