The logs are nestled into a layer of pillow basalt, which means lava flowed into a body of water full of water-logged logs, protecting them from actually igniting.
So yeah, fossils can form in lava in some circumstances. If you want to get /out/ and see for yourself check out Ginkgo Petrified Forest State Park near Vantage. Most of the logs present were pulled out of the basalt during highway construction.
