>>905241I don't get it, honestly. This isn't the first pipeline to cross under the Missouri. It's not even the first to cross under the Missouri in that area. Blocking the pipeline will either cause it to be rerouted or cause the oil to be sent by train instead. These are net neutral and net negative in terms of environmental impact relative to building the pipeline as planned, respectively.
I'm all for keeping the oil in the ground and transitioning to carbon-neutral energy sources. I'm all for protecting water. I just don't see how this accomplishes either. Pushing for more stringent monitoring for leaks on the pipeline or something would have made far more sense.
