I think of myself as a lover of woodlands and greenery, and I look at photos of thick, mountainous forests and imagine all the safety and seclusion such a landscape has to offer.
but in reality, I find myself drawn to deserts, where the land offers no shelter or sustenance, where bushcraft is useless, and you can't linger in one place. I don't know why but I'm addicted to the idea of tramping over arid mountains, carrying all your supplies on your back, with a single destination in mind. To carry ten days' worth of food on your back but not know where your next drink is going to come from is such a thrill.
my fiance and I are about to depart for New Zealand for one full year. She's spent months researching all the tropical forests and mountain ranges we'll be able to explore together, and I've been pretending to be as excited as her. but I'm planning a solo expedition through the mountains of Morocco next year (it'll be my 4th time going there). I haven't told her yet, but I think about it every day.
