Also renting is probably a good idea right now because kayaks a canoes are selling like fucking hot cakes, especially the entry level ones. Even more expensive stores like REI and LL Bean can't keep stock on the floor (however that means in 1-2 years time there will be a FLOOD of used kayaks on the market). Local rental places usually sell off their retired boats once a year, too.
Just please, PLEASE stay away from those <$100 inflatable pool toy kayaks like pic related. They're cheap garbage and you don't want to trust your safety to one.
