>>1699132Though it will always exist in society, it is the job of moral citizens and decent folk to root out pedophilia wherever it turns its ugly head. Whether youth leadership, those who damage their family, the clergy, the wealthy or powerful, or anyone else who engages in the destruction of one's childhood, the sexual abuse of children cannot be tolerated. It may be an uphill battle that will be fought indefinitely, but child molestation should be destroyed, and the cycle of abuse associated with it must be stopped.
The fact the BSA was willing to quiet sexual abuse within its ranks for so long (admittedly, it's difficult to police an organization of the size and level of decentralization as they had) showcased a need for a massive reformation, if not removal from the public sphere. I don't like it, seeing as the BSA did a LOT of good for countless young men across North America (frankly scouting organizations can do great things for youth development) but the fact remains that sexual abuse was ignored by the organization out of fear of public allegations. Obviously, our age of journalistic justice isn't something that will make groups similar to the BSA feel incentivised to be open about issues that occur in their organization. Instead, they wound up trying to keep quiet, leading to a much larger problem later on.
Enjoy a picture of Major Frederick Russel Burnham, one of the founding members of the scouts movement. I'm sure even he would look at the modern scouts with a degree of apprehension.
