Look into the pinhoti trail, it goes along the border of GA into nearly the middle of AL where it's usually above freezing over winter. starts about twenty miles northwest of springer mountain.
there are definitely people who spend several years out in the woods like that. i've only been out a few months max. but if you have no responsibilities totally go do it. i'll be jealous.
you could also probably skip onto the florida trail as well and be guaranteed a comfy winter.
