Good thread bros but I feel like some of you guys are making a simple mistake. Being self sufficient doesn't mean having ALL your food and resources come from your property. That's impossible and it never worked like that in any point of human history.
The way they did it and we should do is have a main source of income (e.g. farming crops) and small side farming for your own use (chickens, a couple of cows, pigs, etc). You use your main income to sell and trade locally with your neighbors for whatever you need and the side stuff guarantees a good share of your nutrition.
If you're smart about it you don't even have to have huge land and wait years for your crops to be ready for harvest. For example a small 150 square meter barn can house 1000 laying chickens. They're laying eggs every day and you can butcher the old ones.
Another example is honey bees. It practically doesn't matter the size of your land since bees don't give a fuck about fences and will use all the land they have to feed. I mean of course you'll still make a sizeable initial investment but it may start praying for itself almost instantly.
Yeah it's not epic innawoods off the grid hermit but you get to that point after at least a decade of preppring anyway, so no sense in trying to go directly to that.
Now post homestead channels and waifus.
