I gave permethrin a try. Sprayed tights, shirt, and socks two hours before wearing, let dry. It was a light coating too, probably less than recommended.
Wearing tights was probably a mistake, but i figured it was an extension of the sock concept. Anyway, I think i absorbed too much of it and it made me feel shaky and weak. I took off those clothes, slept it off and I was fine, but it put a fear into me. My feet do feel a little stiff still, but that could be the hiking.
This stuff is also extremely toxic to cats and I have cats and I worry about my sprayed clothes harming my cats if i leave them out (even after washing).
What was wrong with deet?
The irony of permethrin is you can't put it on your skin, so you have to keep your clothes on to be protected. They say you can use it on your gear, but not inside your sleeping bag? If I can't use it inside my bag then why should i trust it next to my skin with my sweaty clothes?
And by the way, I'm not about to spray all my gear with permethrin just for a two week protection - that just seems like a scam to me
Is it really a repellent or does it just kill ticks that end up on you?
Maybe I'm being too hard on the stuff and I used it improperly. I'd appreciate some better instruction. Just knowing how powerful this stuff is freaks me out.
Oh and they say it's odorless but i can totally smell it and i prefer the smell of deet. Actually, i like the smell of deet, it means camping.
General tick strategies would be appreciated.
