I'm not sure how you use yours with just the tip but pic related is how my old firesteels would look after couple seasons. The dimple is where i would stop applying pressure with striker. Using just the tip is fine if you have some extremely flammable tinder but that's not what you find in the woods, especially in rainy seasons.
