What worked for me is the Garmin Alpha 100, it tracks, tones, vibrates and shocks. It doubles as a GPS device will most trails and roads it has been one of my best /out/ tools in my gear stack.
As soon as I tone my dog he breaks whatever he is doing and looks for me and runs to heal. That's if my first whistle by mouth is not heard.
