In the rest of the world, not everyone is out to kill you. Hell, the kind of people you're going to be running into will for the most part be people like you, the rest will be locals that are just living there and aren't going to cause you any trouble.
Whatever could possibly happen to you would be caused mostly by a reckless behaviour than your incapacity you defend yourself with a gun. Like, you know, carrying a gun, the kind of thing that attracts trouble more than it keeps at bay.
