I just did a 4 month trip in a class B RV, AKA camper van. It was pretty great, but since I went alone and don't have a dog it was lonely. I wouldn't want to do it full time without a gf to come along. I met lots of people doing it and I was the only one who didn't have either a dog or human companion with them.
I'm going to do it again in a couple years but this time in a custom built camper with things how I want them with room for three to four people.
I'm going to import a long wheelbase Mitsubishi Delica Space Gear next year from Japan and add a pop top with stowable bed, a sink, fresh and black water tanks, water pump, battery bank, roof rack, solar panel, 12v fridge, propane tank and toilet. I want my counter space to fold out from around the sink and be able to tuck away while not in use. I don't want to have the stove be fitted into the counter top like in my last van, because sometimes it would be nice to cook outside. I'm thinking about putting the toilet either in the trunk behind the third row of seats or under one of the seats in the third row. I think it could work if you just lift up the seat and there's the toilet. I want the pop top to be powered by linear actuators that are bolted to the car's pillars and can support the weight of whatever is on top so I don't have to load and unload it all the time.
The delicas are super awesome because they have actual 4x4 capability with the ability to select between rear wheel drive mode, part time 4 wheel drive which uses a viscous coupling unit on the center diff, or true 4x4 with a locked center diff with 50/50 torque distribution in either high or low gear range, and some have a LSD in the back as an option as well. They also have second row captain's chairs that swivel around and lie flat along with the first and third row to form two twin beds in some configurations. With a bed in the pop top and two down below it would be a proper camper.
