I have a book that covers my state and another book that covers all of North America and I obviously use the state one more. If you live in the eastern woodlands of the USA honestly you could just learn oaks and hickories and maples and cover a good 65% of what you might expect to find in the forest. If you want to get really autistic, learn how to tell different species from one another within the same genus (aka mockernut vs shagbark vs shellbark hickory)
