Caught this decent carp (I think a common) on a grub fly with a small split shot about 3 feet up and slowly dragging it along the bottom, but I'm a little confused about something. What happened was I was dragging it along the bottom real slowly, something tugged it, so I set the hook and started fighting. When I finally got this thing to shore after about 5 minutes (because I know carp have soft mouths so I was pretty light on the drag), it was hooked in the eye socket (not the eye, but pretty close). My question is, how? Did I just happen to drift it past this and basically snag it with a fly, or was it going for the fly and missed? I would like to be more consistent on catching carp since they put up great fights so I want something repeatable, but if I got lucky on drifting it past it, that's not very repeatable.
