I hitchhiked around Australia for a few years. Bathed regularly at truck stops, universities, beaches and rivers. Washed my clothes in beaches, rivers and buckets. Slept on beaches, in the bush, in the city and on rooftops. Ate out of bakery and supermarket dumpsters because I never learned to hunt and forage. It gets lonely after a while but it's a fair price to have all of your time to yourself. Don't know why everyone is conflating someone on /out/ with the mentally ill/drug addicts that aren't homeless by preference. Nor why anybody would think at all to be anywhere near them. They're fucking retarded and will bring you nothing but trouble. They might be homeless but they're not good at it.
Do have some cash before you head off though. It's always handy for getting out of the city and when shit happens (like being in the city). Sometimes the dumpsters are empty/locked, your shit gets wet and you need to go to a laundromat and sometimes shit just doesn't go your way and it's nice to have a good meal. And if you've never felt the generosity of strangers, damn is it a good feeling.
