I spent two months wandering around Michigan and camping on state or national forest land this past summer. Nothing quite like the immersion in nature; sleeping undisturbed by human noise or presence, waking up to forest greenery and birdsong every morning, bathing in clear cool water, walking sandy tracks for miles, and breaking it up every day or two with visits to idyllic small towns and sandy lake beaches. Overall the climate was amazingly comfortable, and the pest insects were nowhere near as bad as I expected. The best part, undeniably, was the sheer number of public land parcels scattered across the state. It was so easy to find a spot in the forest where I wouldn't be disturbed by passing humans.
