>>1661049Knowing where natural springs are will help you get a clean resource of water, however you can get filters now in combination with chemicals (somewhat respectable, but does not clean every single bacteria). If you want to be sure, then you can always distill it by boiling (but equipment can be a lot in a bag, and it can take some time to do). Iodine is also a way to go, but is not really healthy for you in the long run.
Your problem is ammonia, which is the most common byproduct of agriculture. You can by test kits (looks like strips) for testing the water.
You can somewhat spot ammonia polluted quite easily by the vegetation (if a lot of high grass and plants in the water, it probably have a high ammonia content).
You can choose to pass your water through a filter with activated coal to get rid of the ammonia and then distill it. Activated coal is also good to have in any circumstances, since it can help you avoid a case of bad stomach / poisoning, since you can eat it to get rid of whatever of currently fucking your congestion system up.
Making a small distilling set is quite easy though, and is somewhat easy to use, when you have a fire place going. You don't need long copper tubing to do it, the copper tubing is just to get it to cool down faster (you could use a shorter version of it with an internal spiral for more convenient, else you can store it in your boiling pot.... )
