In europe, there's a dense network of agricultural roads inbetween the villages, with nothing but fields, forests, orchards and meadows. In america, there's a dense network of public roads with residential or business buildings barely a few hundred meters apart. I would hike the french countryside, I wouldn't hike the american countryside.
