I've been secretly planting stuff around my hometown, a mix of native perennials along with a few nonnative food-bearing trees and some self-seeding annuals. Several of my plantings have been destroyed by animals or drunks, but a surprising amount of them are doing pretty good considering I've never watered or fertilized any of them. Foodwise I've planted:
>3 apple cores, gotten at least 1 tree out of them
>a bunch of eastern redbud seeds, at least 2 of which have grown
>12 siberian treeshrub seeds, at least 4 of which have grown
>8 pawpaw seeds, will see how many show up next year
>a half pound bag of pearl millet that has exploded into a million seedheads and made the local birds very happy
>countless sunflowers that have also made the birds happy
>5 american hazelnuts, none of which I've checked up on
>3 cuttings of red mulberry, all of which flourished because mulberries are hardcore
>over a dozen perennial thicket beans, only one of which grew
>a bunch more I can't remember off the top of my head
I figure that since I can't fix the world's problems I can at least make my local area better for the wildlife and old foragers, plus if the world ends or whatever I'll know where food is and potentially die slightly later than everyone else. Anyone else doing stuff like this?
