At some point I just stopped mentioning solo camping specifically and just told people I like to camp / photograph / hike and all that outdoorsy stuff and only mentioned that I do it alone when I was asked or I knew the person better. Most people take it more easily this way and if it's regular thing you do they'll accept it some day. My coworkers just stopped questioning why I'm bringing my hiking backpack every other friday.
No way you can avoid the weirdness if you meet someone who has very little knowledge about camping or none at all. Friend of mine still thinks I'm insane because I am able to "sleep on the floor"
