there's something like 950 remote huts maintained by DoC scattered all through the mountains. some of them take 8~10 days hike to get to and only get a few visitors a year, others you need to book ~6 months in advance to be sure you have a spot.
only costs like $50 a year for a hut pass or $5 for a night if you wanna do a one-off.
