>>1834413Britbong here. Was in the scouts since 7 and in the cadets since 13. Scouts was really good at a young age, but the older I got, the less serious people took it. We still did a good amount of sc/out/ing (did lots of shooting actually) but more along the lines of day hikes, less along the lines of bushcraft or several night camps. Cadets made up for that though, had a good competiton in it where we had to arrive and set up camp then do about a 20km hike in about 10 hours the next day, all while carrying all the kit (tents, cookers, the lot) while on our backs. Sometimes the staff would throw a lift and shift, once we'd just had our MRE's and were looking forward to our bags when at 10PM we got told to pack everything down in 5 minutes, then we had a hour-ish hike in the dark, before we set up camp in the dark. Also had challenges along the hike, once we had to climb a cliff with all our kit on still, another good one was doing close target recon alongside the normal ones such as shelter making, first aid and fire starting. Taught me all the skills I still use today (not everything of course but, navigation, first aid, boating, shooting, hiking, even a tad of hiking in the Brecon Beacons, alongside how to polish a uniform (pic related)).
Recommend getting your kids into it if they ain't too old, I'm planning to sign mine up one day.
