I know most of it is bullshit, and the monestary raid scene in the first (?) season is how most viking battles went down. In and out before reinforcements came.
It's a glorified version of the real story. Anglo Saxons were pretty badass, and did of course kill a lot of vikings. Nobody has said that show was accurate, it's just nice to watch a show set in that time period that isn't magic and complete bullshit.
Also the real Ragnar died by getting thrown into a pit of snakes or some shit, so look forward to that in the show.
