The space that is occupied by cars right now, most notably roads and parkinglots, are not shrared spaces, they are for cars and humans are obstacles. If you removed them, say in favour of a one lane street where bikes can go in either direction plus a broad walkway on tie sides, somewhat like in the picture, it would not get more crowded, you would even have a lot more space and you might actually want to go outside if you don't feel out of place.
