6. Tasty yum yums
These are things that aren't really food as much as they are seasonings. Usually have some nutrients and medicinal value
Sassafras root bark, The root in root beer
Wintergreen, tastes like Wintergreen can be found green in winter. Berries edible too.
Spicebush (pic related), leaves and twigs (even in winter) can be made into tea. The berries when ripe taste like all spice and when unripe taste like black pepper.
Juniper berries, make your own gin
Ramps, basically wild onions, very tasty
Field garlic, wild garlic. Can be found in dead winter. Even peaking up above the snow.
If you want to get into foraging and you live in the Eastern half of North America I highly recommend you get all three of Samuel Thayer's books. By far the best books on foraging. I also have Northeast foraging by Leda Meredith and recommend that too.
