It's kept clipped at the top of the pocket horizontal... not for some tactical purpose, just keeps it raised up out of the way of things going in/out of the pocket, doesn't swing around quite as much and I like drawing it back rather than up. What you can do also depends on the weight of the knife, style of the pocket, etc...
