As it is, a few longer portages is preferable to many shorter ones, especially if you a) don't feel like getting wet, b) have a lot of loose shit (seriously, pack it down, share bags for gear, and try to have 1 bag/person, of about the same weight) or c) suck at getting motivated at the start of a trail.
The faster you start, the faster you finish.
And portaging- a lot of the shorter ones, you can just hop out of your boat, and walk 'er through the rapids. Pic related.
