I had a good day's work cleaning, tying up, and thinning out this raised bed of volunteer tomato plants. I wasn't going to do anything with them, but some are just loaded with tomatoes. So, today I took some used natural gas pipe (free from well tenders and well companies here) and 6mm thick plastic to make a tunnel over them. The gas pipe is just cut to length and stuck into the block holes down to the ground.
The soda bottles I've been saving up from family and friends for like 6 years now. Normally, I'd fill them all the way up, but since there's a chance they might freeze and bust in this tunnel, I decided to fill them only 2/3 to 3/4 full. They are for thermal mass; to absorb sunlight, turn it into thermal energy, and release it when it gets cooler at night.
The tunnel isn't finished. I plan on putting some trim around the bottom and fix up the edges. I just didn't have enough energy or daylight to finished it today.
