A modern phone will never beat a stand alone GPS ever. Not in terms of GPS accuracy, battery life, IP rating, or speed of satellite acquisition. What happens when you have no cell service or WiFi? What happens if you get a call or an app seizes memory and you lose your bearing or coordinates? Can you lend your phone to a friend or family member for a weekend like a stand alone GPS? Why don't armed forces just use tablet and phone apps?
