Shooting unsuspecting small game is different from a person who is already jacked up on adrenaline and other drugs and is ready to kill you. Will 22 stop him? Sure if you hit him in the right places. You have your 6 shots, or w/e the capacity of your revolver is, and god i hope you brought a revolver given rimfires reliability. The fight wont start at a comfortable distance, you wont have time to aim and half your shots will miss at all. By the time you put three 22 bullets through him you will have an axe stuck in your shoulder blade or several knife wounds in your chest. Now ask yourself who is wining the fight at that moment? Sure the target will bleed out eventually but that will be in minutes and he will keep stabbing you while you just lie there in shock.
A "good" self defense round needs to instantly incapacitate your target with one shot, no matter the placement. Watch this:
