Both can be found in nearly pristine condition, ready to sew, for under $200(CAD)
I've sewn many layers of 1000D Cordura, 1680D ballistic nylon, 10oz canvas, 37oz waxed canvas, light leather, and many combinations of those.
Might not always be happy, but if it fits under the presser foot it'll sew it.
I highly suggest doing some research into older machines before they started making things from plastics.
If you keep them well oiled + greased, sharp needles, and a thorough cleaning every so often they'll keep chugging along for another hundred years.
