There's more maintenance with those cheaper ones. Though, they are near perfect for sandpoint wells and simple garden duty stuff. If anyone is interested in a sanitary handpump well, check out "Bison Pumps" products. They are stainless steel and can actually be installed on your normal house water lines. They can be used when the electric is off and your normal water well pump isn't working; so long as the head-rise-distance from the water to the pump is within 25 feet of course(for shallow well versions).. These types can pass kitchen health inspections, but cost $1k to $1.5k.
